Abstract

Xenoliths carried to the surface in volcanic rocks provide a snapshot of magma storage conditions and evolution in the otherwise inaccessible sub-volcanic realm. In particular, cumulate xenoliths yield an array of complex crystal textures that occur as a function of the physical conditions under which the melt crystallises. However, whilst variations in P-T conditions have been shown to influence crystal textures, there are few quantitative constraints upon the relationship between P-T values and the consequential textural output. With reference to natural xenolith samples from Iceland, the Lesser Antilles and Eifel Volcanic Field, this project aims to combine geochemistry, experimental petrology and analogue modelling to better quantify the conditions controlling the formation of cumulate textures within the crust. This will provide the opportunity to improve understanding of the architecture of crustal melt stores, with significance for the assessment of volcanic hazard and risk.
