Born and raised in rural Zimbabwe, BScHons in zoology from the University of Cape Town, PhD in animal ecology from Wits University, South Africa. Postdoc at Utah State University, USA, then lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe. Professor (Austin Roberts Chair in African Mammalogy) and Director of the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Then moved to the US to become Head of the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University, followed by a spell as a regular faculty member (professor) conducting research and teaching there, before moving to the UK in 2023 to become Director of Science of the Zoological Society of London where my responsibilities include directing the Institute of Zoology (IoZ).

Research Interests:

Ecology and conservation of large mammals in terrestrial ecosystems, rewilding, plant-herbivore interactions, resilience-focused management of ecosystems
