The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investments across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. We are now seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Atmospheric Science, specialising in air pollution to complement our extensive and internationally excellent research and teaching in atmospheric science.  We currently have one of the largest research groups in air pollution in Europe, and also offer a Masters course in Air Pollution Management and Control.

Applications are invited from candidates with research interests in Air Pollution and/or Atmospheric Chemistry, and we particularly encourage applicants who will complement our research strengths in urban atmospheric science and related topics. Preference will therefore be given to candidates whose work is based primarily upon urban to regional (i.e. micro and meso) scales, with interests across a broad range of specialisms including field and laboratory studies, data analysis and air quality modelling. Candidates with a background in novel data science techniques and utilisation of in-situ or remote observational data are also encouraged to apply. Candidates with a knowledge of air quality management, and those able to strengthen our engagement with industry / business and wider outreach would be especially welcome.

Applicants for this post must demonstrate international excellence in their research area. Evidence of a track record in publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact is essential, alongside a track record of obtaining external research funding.  Evidence of outreach through spin-outs, patents or other applications of research would also be viewed positively.

Willingness to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the School and College is strongly encouraged, and applicants must have a commitment to delivering excellent research-informed teaching and learning, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and communicating the relevance and impact of their research to stakeholders.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to equity and be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement multiple perspectives as the foundation of a rich learning experience; integrate diverse experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and/or provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles, populations, and intellectual interests.

  • Normally, a higher degree relevant to the research/teaching area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.

Demonstrated excellence in at least Research, with competence in Learning and Teaching and Management and Administration.
