Evaluating transport of African mineral dust to the Amazon Basin

Mineral dust from the Sahara and Sahel provides the Amazon Basin with essential nutrients, although the process is still poorly understood. There is little understanding where dust is coming from, and what the concentration of nutrients in the dust is. This information, however, is vital for modelling response of dust emissions to a changing climate, and to assess the impact it will have on the Amazon. This PhD will utilise remote sensing to map dust sources, track dust events, and quantify dust transport. In order to quantify nutrient flux and its variability, it will combine this analysis with field expeditions to an African dust source region, as well as the Amazon, to trap dust derived from known sources and study its chemical composition.
