As part of NERC’s Added-Value Activities in Innovation grants, the London NERC DTP has organised a number of training and networking workshops, events and internships to develop business and entrepreneurial skills, engage with industrial, commercial and policy end-users, and develop specific skills in collecting, interpreting and commodifying environmental data.
In 2015 we hosted a 5-day integrated programme of lectures and workshops at the Siemen’s Crystal building at the Royal Victoria Docks in East London, covering topics at the interface between environmental science, business, and science policy. The week included sessions on Sustainability in Big Business, Environmental Science in Business, Becoming an Entrepreneur, Policy and the Impact Agenda, and Art and Science, featuring speakers from The Eden Project, UCL STEaPP, UCL Advances, Rezatec and Tipping Point. The week was included as part of Cohort 1’s term 2 training programme.
In 2017 we held another 5-day ‘Innovation Week’, based on our successful programme from 2015. Hosted at the Siemen’s Crystal in East London, the week included an Environment Hackathon, as well as workshops on the Impact Agenda, Sustainability in Big Business, Environmental Science and Business, Becoming an Entrepreneur, and Policy Making. Sessions were facilitated by the UCL Environment Domain, The Eden Project, UCL STEaPP, UCL Innovation and Enterprise, and featuring guest lectures from Natural England and the RSPB. The week was included as part of Cohort 3’s term 2 training programme, with additional spaces available to Cohort 2 and to students from the Imperial SSCP and Reading SCENARIO DTPs.
Environmental Data Production and Commodification
The London NERC DTP hosted a one-week course in 2017 on Environmental Data Production and Commodification, using facilities at the NERC Airborne Research Facility (ARF) and Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF) and Rezatec Ltd. Students developed the skills to identify, collect, interpret and commodify environmental data. This fully-funded course was open to all UK PhD and MSc students studying relevant subjects.
In the spring of 2017, the London NERC DTP offered six, three-month internships for students to work with a relevant organisation and gain experience in business, policy, and industry. These internships were available to London NERC DTP students in Cohorts 1 and 2.
