The focus of this theme is on gaining a fuller understanding of the ecological patterns and processes that contribute to Earth’s biodiversity. The interface between biodiversity and environmental change is of vital importance in monitoring the ecological consequences arising from environmental change and evaluating the threats, now and in the future, to biodiversity.
Rigorous assessments of the deleterious effects on communities of biodiversity depletion and identification of possible mitigation strategies are needed. For example, such knowledge will be key to the provision of food, clean water and ecosystem services that are vital for our well-being and that of other species. Specific interests include where and how life occurs, the role of ecological factors such as climate change and habitat loss in widespread extinction of species and the recent influence of humans on biodiversity and ecology.
The Partners have a huge range of expertise in biogeography, conservation, modeling of the impacts of environmental change, systematics and taxonomy. Members of the DTP are expert in topics including: behavioural responses of organisms to change in their natural environment, biodiversity loss, composition and change within ecological assemblages, conservation and restoration strategies of communities and species, ecosystem services, environmental change, molecular ecology, population demography and dynamics, spatial processes and animal and plant diversity.
